If possible, take mini lessons for each expanse.

The Big 5 Reading Teaching Strategy #2:

Integrate as much as possible.

    • When students are reading, they are using all of the reading skills from each of the Big five areas of reading all at once. Integrating gives you more than time to teach all of the reading skills, and gives them practice putting them together. For example, while teaching reading fluency, as well discuss what the story is nearly to include reading comprehension. Employ phonemic awareness to manipulate vocabulary words.
    • Something to note is that even though phonemic awareness is the study of the SOUNDS of words and not written messages, phonemic awareness instruction was most effective when it included letters. Information technology was not but decoding and reading words, but rather using letters equally a back up to give students a visual every bit they manipulated the sounds.

The Big v Reading Didactics Strategy #three:

When reading a story, include all 5 Reading Skills.

    • Instead of having a separate lesson for each surface area of reading, try having a lesson that revolves around a single story. It tin can start as a read aloud (just read the beginning of the story) and so lead into modeling of all the different skills.
      • Take words from the story and model using phonemic awareness to blend words together every bit you sound out a give-and-take.
      • Point out sight words as yous read, and write them on the lath.
      • Discuss any new and interesting vocabulary words.
      • Model and point out fluent reading.
      • Finish part way through the story and practice summarizing what has happened. Have students make predictions of what they recollect will happen next.
    • Allow the students do the reading skills as they finish reading the story on their ain.
      • Looking for sight words or phonics patterns they have learned in the text (they can proceed a running list on the side).
      • Practicing reading with fluency as they read the text out loud.
      • Add interesting or new words to their list.
      • Verify whether their prediction was correct or wrong, and summarize the entire story when finished.

*Hither are some of my favorite volume recommendations if you are looking for books to read aloud or use in your lessons!

The Big 5 Reading Instruction Strategy #4:

Prioritize most needed aspect in guided reading (for each group), but yet include all v.

    • Sometimes our students need more help in one area than the others. For example, lower students may need more than support in phonemic sensation at the beginning, while your higher students do not demand much practice in information technology. When doing tier 2 reading interventions or small grouping reading, customize your reading instruction to that group's needs. Choose the biggest area of need and focus on that, but all the same include the other areas as much as possible.
      • The exception to this is students who are already proficient in the lower skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, and sometimes fluency). You lot practice not need to back track and spend time on skills that students accept already mastered.
      • If you need help identifying the areas your students need assistance in, this Comprehensive Reading Cess can assistance yous pinpoint exactly where they are struggling.
